The most common form is diabetes mellitus and is due to an excess of sugar in the blood. Also known as sugar diabetes, diabetes mellitus is very common and tends to run in families.
Glucose is the suagar which is present in the body, following the breakdown of carbohydrates and helps provide the body with vitally required amounts of energy. The level of sugar in the blood is normally controlled by the hormone insulin. But this level can be disrupted if the pancreas produces an insufficent amount of insulin, so that the body is unable to process the glucose. As a result of this the body's blood sugar level rises and the energy producing sugar fails to be absorbed into the body's tissues.
This high sugar level causes a constant and excessive thirst, resulting in large quantities of urine to be passed. Symptoms such as tiredness and moodiness may well also result, as may blurred vision hunger and weight loss.
The mellitus form, which is caused by a lack of insulin, is most common in children and young adults. The onset is usually sudden. If the condition is not treated, the patient can soon lapse into unconsciousness and and a coma.
A milder form of millitus can also occur in adults, normally over 40. Usually this comes as a result of the pancreas not supplying the body with a sufficient amount of insulin, and even when it doesso the action of the insulin seems to be ineffective.
